Why dont western christians make their kids memorize the bible?

Hey everyone, first off good evening. Second something has been bugging me, when i was young in my local mosque (yes i AM muslim) we were taught how to memorize and translate the quran and i am just wondering why didnt christian children also go through that? I have alot of orthodox jewish friends and they tell me how they were also taught to memorize sections of the torah, to be honest they say they dont "memorize" they "learn" but when u boil it down its the same thing. Back to the question so WHY DONT christians teach their kids to memorize the bible? I'm just confused because i remember in history class a few years back when our professor spoke of the movement of translating the bible into english and how many people were against that but the goal was so everyone can read for their selves the "word of god".
