Jews, help me with this book I just bought today..?

I bought this book called "Everyman's Talmud" written by Abraham Cohen. I'm interested into Talmud. Is it true the Talmud is the most important text to Judaism other than the Torah (or Tanakh, or Hebrew Bible) itself? And is the book i bought helpful? help?
